When navigating our mental health, healing, or personal growth, we often look inward to understand our patterns and process our past.
But from a trauma-informed perspective, healing never happens entirely in isolation. True wellness requires external anchors, spaces where we don't have to explain or defend our identities, where our realities are reflected back to us, and where we can experience a felt sense of safety.
For queer, trans, and gender-diverse individuals, finding these spaces can be life-changing.
Systemic oppression, microaggressions, and a lack of visible representation can cause the nervous system to remain in a protective state of hypervigilance (high alert). Connecting with dedicated community resources allows our bodies and minds to soften, drop their guards, and experience authentic belonging.
Whether you are seeking mutual peer support, crisis resources, youth spaces, or community advocacy, London and Middlesex County house several incredible organizations.
Here is a curated guide to local, identity-affirming resources available to help you build your village and remind you that you belong here.
Anchor Resources in the City of London
For decades, RHAC has been a foundational pillar of care and community building in southwestern Ontario.
Beyond their vital health services, they host Open Closet, a widely celebrated social support group.
What it is: A drop-in space specifically designed for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth aged 14 to 18.
Why it matters: Open Closet provides a warm, supervised environment to discuss everything from the mechanics of coming out to queer history, body image, and navigating relationships. It normalizes the youth experience within a highly supportive peer framework.
If you are a parent trying to better understand your child’s gender identity, or an individual seeking a compassionate family-style support network, PFLAG London is an invaluable resource.
What it is: A volunteer-led organization offering peer support groups, telephone resources, and community education.
Why it matters: Trauma can often ripple through family dynamics when an individual comes out. PFLAG holds a gentle, non-judgmental space for parents, families, and allies to ask questions, process their own feelings, and learn how to provide deep, systemic validation for their loved ones.
3. Anova
For queer and trans individuals navigating interpersonal conflict, gender-based trauma, or sexual violence, mainstream crisis spaces don't always feel culturally safe.
What it is: London’s largest shelter and sexual assault support center, operating with an explicit commitment to inclusive, intersectional support.
Why it matters: Anova provides specialized individual and group peer counselling that recognizes the unique barriers faced by the 2SLGBTQIA+ community when seeking safety and crisis care.
Strengthening the Rural Landscape: Middlesex County
It is well documented that queer individuals living outside major urban centers face distinct challenges, including geographical isolation and fewer visible community hubs.
Thankfully, incredible grass-roots networks are actively changing the landscape across Middlesex County:
Strathroy Pride: A dedicated non-profit organization focused entirely on elevating, educating, and supporting the rural 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Middlesex. They host localized meetups, share localized resources, and ensure that pride and visibility aren't restricted by city borders.
The Rainbow Optimist Club (Southwestern Ontario): This unique organization specifically targets rural youth and their families across Elgin, Middlesex, and Oxford counties. They focus on creating accessible, inclusive social opportunities so that youth growing up outside the city center feel deeply connected to a wider peer collective.
Middlesex County Library System: Never underestimate your local library branch! Libraries across the county act as essential "Community Connectors," regularly hosting inclusive programming, sourcing queer literature, and serving as safe physical hubs for local marginalized groups.
